OK, free health insurance is called Medicaid – welfare health insurance. They won’t pay for a root canal – they’ll only pay for an extraction – which, btw, would cost around $ 100, even without insurance.

Medicaid, the household income counts, not just YOUR income.

There’s no free dental insurance that pays for a root canal. Even with dental insurance that you buy, it rarely pays for half the cost of a root canal.

If you have your heart set on a root canal, instead of just having the tooth pulled, you can probably find a dentist to make payment arrangements.

First make sure the hospital your granddaughter is taken to is a non-profit organization. In order to keep their non-profit standing they are required to accept all people needing medical treatment whether they are able to pay or not. They are still some of the best hospitals around. They will work with you on payments and usually as long as you send them just a few dollars a month they are satisfied. Sometimes, some of the affiliated providers such as anesthesiologists and even doctors, will just write off their charges. They should also be able to direct you to organizations who can help you pay the bills.

Good luck to you. I know how it is. I would do anything for my grandchildren.

May I first say–I know that you are of grandparenting age, so don’t let anyone here bully you. And anyone can post anything in Seniors, there is no rule against it. Yahoo may suggest other categories, but the choice is totally yours.

There is emergency medicaid. If the child is hospitalized, and your children cannot afford the bill, they may go to the medicaid office and apply. It will cover a one-time illness. Years ago when my son was shot in the eye, we applied for that and got it. It covered everything that had to do with the shooting incident for months. Although it would not cover standard well-child care.

Good luck with this, I know how heartrending it is to watch a child suffer with an illness, and add to that, the worry of paying for it. Bless you both.

It’s all of us, everywhere not just there. Not just a tough time, but just not affording it. It’s getting worse everyday. Some of my meds and needed treatments I go without and I have some insurance.

The baby’s parents must speak to someone in the business office at the hospital about setting up a payment plan for the hospital bills. If they take the time to do this and explain their financial limits the bills might even be adjusted to a smaller amount. At the very least the hospital will allow them to pay an affordable amount each month on the bill. I don’t think you can set this up because of the confidentiality requirements hospitals have to comply with. You could take the lead by offering to accompany the baby’s parent to the hospital’s billing/business office and get this done. Be polite but firm in asking for a reduced bill and small monthly payments on what is owed to the hospital and the hospital staff will cooperate.

Insurance bills are grossly exaggerated when they are prepared and can be challenged. I have recently heard that there are organizations that will arbitrate these expenses.
If this is catastrophic illness the state may be able to assist you with this cost as well as children’s hospitals that specialize will provide counseling.
I wish I had more concrete answers for you.

You may want to speak with a local health insurance broker. Try one who represents multiple insurance carriers. Be sure to let them know that you need a policy with maternity benefits.
